Google is a public corporation, traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Google primarily earns revenue from advertising related to its Internet products, which include:
- Search
- Online Maps
- Productivity Tools
- Social Networking
- Video
Google has also created a web browser and operating system for mobile devices. The "Googleplex," the name Google has adopted for their headquarters is located in Mountain View, California.
Google's proclaimed goal is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". This lofty goal also makes clear the amount of value the company sees in being the librarian to the world.
Additionally the company professes a slogan, coined by an early engineer of "Don't be evil." As Google becomes more and more dominant, this slogan is routinely put to the test. Google is frequently criticized over privacy issues as well as censorship.
Despite all this, Google seems poised to capitalize on current trends in technology. They were early adopters of "cloud computing," and are front-runners in creating tools for making the "web the computer." As they have grown however they seem to increasingly come into conflict between their lofty goals and the desire to make a profit.
