Walt Disney World Resort
Orlando's Walt Disney World resort is the most popular and largest resort complex in the world. As of 2010 it consists of four theme parks, two water parks, 24 hotels and a myriad of dining, shopping and entertainment options. The property can be abbreviated Walt Disney World, Disney World or WDW.
Walt Disney himself began plans for Disney World in 1959. The company began looking for land for a second park to supplement Disneyland in California. The Disney company realized that the Eastern coast was untapped. Additionally Disney himself had become frustrated by his inability to expand in California and the businesses that had sprung up around Disneyland.
Settling on Orlando, Disney World's Magic Kingdom was rapidly built and opened on October 1, 1971. Since then Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom parks have all been added. The resort still has vast areas of land to continue expansion for some time to come.
